Restorative Practices/Restorative Circles

Many schools are shifting away from traditional school discipline to embrace a model built on Restorative Practices. Our coaches will partner with your staff and students to strengthen your Restorative systems and strategies. From foundational knowledge, to schoolwide practices, to advanced techniques for leading Restorative Circles in the classroom, our trainings support you in building strong restorative communities.

Restorative Practices are strategies implemented to build, maintain and repair relationships within a school community. Our Restorative Practice trainings will provide tools and techniques for creating a caring learning community, addressing concerns, building trust, and resolving conflicts. Our 1-day workshops and 3-day series of trainings provide school professionals the foundational knowledge to begin implementing Restorative Practices into classroom instruction. Methods and techniques will include the practices for conducting restorative circles to build community, strengthen belonging, celebrate success and discuss differences. Our approach is based on the techniques recommended by the International Institute of Restorative Practices (IIRP) and by the work of leading experts in the Restorative Practices field, including Carolyn Boyes-Watson and Kay Pranis.

Training Agenda:
One-Day Workshop: Restorative Practices Foundation Course. This course presents foundational knowledge on Restorative Justice, setting up a Restorative Framework in your school and classroom, and how to conduct Restorative Circles as a means of team-building and relationship building.

Our 3-Day Series includes:

Part One: Restorative Practices Foundation Course(see above for description)

Part Two: Restorative Circle Intensive Course. This course offers a deeper dive into the different types of Restorative Circles. It is an interactive professional development that involves trainees in a wide variety of Restorative Circles, discussing how to select a Circle topic or format for common school-based situations. Through this training, participants develop their own toolkit of Restorative Circles to bring back to their schools and classrooms.

Part Three: Restorative Conferencing for Conflict Resolution Course. This course begins by examining conflict and the different types of Restorative Conferences in the Restorative Practice Framework. Participants learn and practice questioning techniques and reflective listening for conflict resolution using the Peaceful Schools Restorative Conference Model.

Peaceful Schools can complement the Restorative Practices Trainings with on-site programming delivered to students to introduce them to the structures and goals of Restorative Practices. Trainers model the Restorative Practice strategies with students, and may provide further embedded support to school staff as they implement Restorative Practices throughout the school.

De-escalation Simulation

Come practice your skills! This highly-interactive training helps school staff develop and rehearse strategies for recognizing and responding to students’ challenging behaviors. Through a unique classroom simulation, participants practice and receive feedback on de-escalation skills in a supportive environment.

Participants in this training gain foundational knowledge and skills to understand the escalation cycle, and practice strategies for identifying positions of collaboration to interrupt the cycle. Our trained actors simulate an array of student personalities displaying common classroom misbehaviors, providing participants the opportunity to practice newly gained de-escalation techniques and strategies. Real-time feedback, peer support, and actionable coaching allow participants to immediately incorporate new skills into their teaching repertoire.

This training is focused on using verbal and non-verbal skills to observe and address students. This training does not present restraint or any other physical intervention techniques.

De-escalation Training can be offered as a 1-day workshop, or as a 2-day series allowing for extended simulation scenarios and advanced de-escalation techniques.

Training Agenda:
Day 1: Foundations of De-escalation (3 hours)
          De-escalation Simulation (3 hours)

Day 2 (optional): Advanced De-escalation Simulation (3 hours)

Peaceful People Social-Emotional Curriculum

Looking to equip your team with the tools and resources to teach students to be more peaceful? Peaceful People is our classroom-based social-emotional education program designed to promote healthy social development, prevent youth violence, and foster positive community relationships. Participants receive training in and access to our full suite of lesson plans, activity guides, and classroom structures to establish and maintain a positive classroom culture.

We describe a positive classroom climate as an environment where students want to learn, parents want their child to go, and staff want to teach and nurture. In this engaging training, school staff learn best practices for developing and teaching classroom expectations and procedures to build and sustain a positive, peaceful, and nurturing classroom climate.

Each participant is introduced to our Peaceful People curriculum, and receives a one-year subscription to our online curriculum and resources. Peaceful People lessons are fun and interactive, using discussions, hands-on activities, children's books and behavioral rehearsal to engage students in the development of resiliency skills and social competence. Participants will leave this session prepared to plan and deliver Peaceful People lessons in their classroom setting.

Training Agenda:
Classroom Climate Basics (3 hours)
Peaceful People Introduction (3 hours)

Nurturing Classroom

Chronic stress and trauma can change the way a student’s brain functions, affecting their ability to learn and communicate effectively. This training highlights trauma-informed teaching strategies to support student learning and growth.

Through this session, teachers will be supported in developing a proactive 8-week plan to establish positive relationships in the classroom. Participants will explore how trauma affects a student’s learning process and can have lifelong effects on their whole well-being. Teachers and other school professionals will leave with an understanding of how positive interactions and relationships foster the learning process. This course allows participants to plan how everything they do in the classroom, from greeting students to the physical set up of the room, can positively communicate how they feel about teaching and set the tone for how students will learn. The facilitator will provide case studies, trauma-informed teaching strategies, and resources for building positive relationships.

Training Agenda:
Nurturing Classroom Background and Strategies (6 hours)

The Power of Relationships

Positive teacher-students relationships are the cornerstone to a successful education. Yet it is often just assumed that teachers already know how to make these crucial connections with students. In this session, you will learn new approaches for establishing and maintaining connected relationships with each student within the instructional setting of your classroom.

This course is designed to provide teachers with the opportunity for deep discussion about how to establish and maintain connected relationships with each student. The course will provide an overview of empirical evidence supporting the benefits of strong teacher-student relationships, and will present tools and techniques for building positive relationships within the instructional practices of the classroom. Throughout the training teachers will be provided with opportunities to share from personal experiences the successes and challenges of building and maintaining rapport, engaging with students across a range of experiences, and the challenge each year of letting go and saying goodbye.

Training Agenda:
The Power of Relationships (6 hours)

Practicing Mindfulness

Trauma-informed mindfulness practice focuses on calming the mind to help students focus and self-regulate. This experiential training provides activities and resources to bring back to your classroom, including body scanning, awareness of breath, and intentional awareness meditation.

School-Based Mediation Training

Do you ever feel like you are putting band-aids on student issues? Getting to the root cause of a conflict between students is often challenging and time consuming. This training is designed to give you all the tools you need to peacefully resolve conflicts within your school community. Completion of the 4-day training leads to certification as a School Based Mediator, and equips you with the tools to immediately implement a Mediation Program in your school.

Our interactive training will certify you to conduct Mediations to help students peacefully resolve conflicts, and will prepare you to support a Peer Mediation Program in your school or district. Our Mediation Training is designed to meet the Association for Conflict Resolution mediation training standards. Over 4 days of training, participants learn the philosophy behind Mediation, along with the structures, procedures, and communication techniques required for successfully facilitating Mediations. Additionally, ample time is built into our training for practicing the Mediation Process using hands-on activities and role playing real-life scenarios.

Completion of the 4-day training leads to certification as a School-Based Mediator, and prepares you to lead a School-Based Mediation program at your school. As part of the training package, we will provide you and your team with the forms and tools you will need to run your Mediation program, along with up to 10 hours of Technical Assistance through phone/e-mail/skype throughout the school year as you establish your Mediation program. Completion of this training is a prerequisite for partnering with Peaceful Schools to initiate, run, and maintain your own Peer Mediation Program.

A refresher/booster training is offered as a follow-up 6-12 months after the initial training. This allows participants to discuss their experiences with a trainer, receive instruction to deepen skills, and support the school-wide procedures and record-keeping involved in running a successful School-Based Mediation Program.
